Welcome to our multicultural early learning centre on the stunning West Coast, where we offer quality care and education for pēpi, toddlers, and young tamariki. Our strong local curriculum, close community ties, and inclusive values create a welcoming space where every child and whānau feels supported.

Meet our Centre Manager

Kia ora

My name is Lynette! A born and raised West Coaster, I have also lived in Christchurch, Wellington, Canberra, and Tonga. I am a proud mother to my three adult daughters and their families, which includes two precious grandchildren.

I have been teaching for over 20 years, and in my role as CM since 2015. I am passionate about providing a centre where respect and relationships are valued, tamariki and kaiako have fun together, and where diversity is acknowledged, respected and celebrated.

I believe being part of such an environment supports our tamariki to succeed and leave our centre ready to “fly” in the bigger world of primary school. In my spare time I enjoy gardening, reading and spending time with my family.

About Active Explorers Nelson Street

At Active Explorers Nelson Street, we’re all about building strong, respectful relationships and celebrating what makes each child unique. Our localised curriculum weaves in pūrākau, history, and values from our community to help tamariki grow socially, emotionally, and culturally.

Our warm and welcoming centre is purpose-built, with spaces that reflect the beauty of our surroundings and the cultures of the families we work with. Whether it’s tending the veggie garden or exploring open-ended resources, tamariki are encouraged to lead their own learning through play.

We have three age-specific rooms and a close-knit centre community. From Matariki bonfires to visits to the local rest home, we embrace hands-on, heart-led learning. School transitions are well supported through visits, teacher connections and personalised activities that help each child feel prepared and confident.

Our Team

Our passionate team of kaiako have worked together for years, creating a loving, inclusive space where tamariki and whānau feel seen and supported. We value open communication, and our shared strengths include gardening, bicultural practice, and helping children build confidence and resilience for the journey ahead.

Our Rooms

Our centre is inspired by the natural beauty and cultural richness of Greymouth. Inside and out, tamariki enjoy inviting, flexible spaces filled with resources they can explore freely. This helps them grow independence, curiosity and a strong sense of belonging.

0–2 years

Rūma Kakaruwai

A peaceful, nurturing room where our youngest pēpi build trusting relationships and confidence. With lots of sensory play, cuddles and familiar routines, Rūma Kakaruwai is a gentle space for learning and discovery.

2-3 years

Rūma Kea

In this energetic space, toddlers are supported as they explore their independence. Rūma Kea encourages imagination, communication and social learning through meaningful play and engaging experiences.

3–5 years

Rūma Tūī

This room is all about preparing tamariki for the next big step. With a focus on local stories, confidence-building and social skills, Rūma Tūī helps preschoolers understand who they are and how they can make a positive impact in the world.
