I’m Shona! For as long as I can remember, I’ve been passionate about creating a nurturing, supportive space where children can learn, grow, and thrive. With 26 years of experience in early childhood education, my mission has always been to provide quality care and education in a group setting, while working closely with families to help children develop the lifelong skills they need to succeed.

What keeps me inspired every day? The children! I love working with kids of all ages and from all walks of life. They constantly amaze me with their curiosity, creativity, and unique perspectives. They teach me as much as I teach them, and they never fail to put a smile on my face with their wonderful, sometimes wildly unexpected ways of seeing the world.

At Active Explorers Masterton, we focus on child-led learning, allowing children to thrive by exploring their own interests in a creative and supportive environment. Our centre embraces the Reggio Emilia philosophy, where children's artwork and ideas are respected, helping them develop confidence and independence.

We provide a nurturing, exciting, and fun environment with four developmentally-focused learning spaces. Each space is designed to meet the needs of different age groups, with tailored activities that encourage learning through play. Our multicultural approach fosters inclusivity, where children from various cultural backgrounds can learn and grow together.

At Active Explorers, we offer a well-rounded curriculum with opportunities for outdoor exploration, music, arts, literacy, and community events. We cater to infants through to school-age children, creating a holistic learning experience for every child.

Our Spaces

Active Explorers Masterton provides a beautiful and inviting space for children to explore and grow. Each room is thoughtfully designed to meet the developmental needs of different age groups, encouraging creativity and play-based learning.

0 - 15 months

Kea Room

This cosy, calm space is perfect for infants to explore with their senses. The wooden deck area with roll-down blinds ensures comfort year-round, while a small sandpit and daily learning resources allow babies to begin their early learning journey.

15 months - 2.5 years

Pukeko Room

The Pukeko Room features a large deck area with drop-down blinds for year-round use. With a spacious grass area, sandpit, and climbing equipment, this room is designed for toddlers to develop motor skills, engage in imaginative play, and build social connections.

2 - 3.5 years

Kiwi Room

The Kiwi Room is designed for active and curious toddlers, offering plenty of space for running, climbing, and exploring. This room fosters creativity through arts and hands-on play, with a large sandpit, mud kitchen, and quiet spaces for rest and reading.

3.5 - 6 years

Tui Room

The Tui Room provides a dynamic learning environment for preschoolers, offering opportunities for independent learning and group activities. With a focus on school readiness, children engage in more complex activities that build cognitive and social skills in preparation for school.
